Former VW CEO Herbert Diess Launches Electric Tractor Startup
The automotive industry is no stranger to unexpected career pivots, but the latest move from former Volkswagen Group chief executive Herbert Diess is turning heads globally. Following his departure from the German auto giant in 2022, Diess is taking a page out of the history books of legendary industrialist Ferruccio Lamborghini by transitioning from passenger cars to agricultural machinery. He has officially announced the launch of a new Munich-based electric tractor startup named DIESS E-Agrartechnik AG.
The new venture aims to shake up the agricultural sector with highly efficient, zero-emission technology. The company's debut project is a mid-range electric tractor designed specifically to meet the demands of modern farmers and municipal service fleets. Scheduled to hit the market in 2027, the e-tractor promises to offer heavy-duty performance that can easily compete with traditional diesel machinery, but at a fraction of the cost.
Revolutionary Tech: Swappable Batteries and 50% Lower Running Costs
According to details shared by Diess, the upcoming vehicle is engineered to deliver outstanding cost savings and operational efficiency. Here are some of the key highlights of the proposed electric tractor:
- Fifty Percent Lower Operating Costs: By replacing diesel internal combustion engines with an advanced electric powertrain, operators can expect to cut their daily running expenses in half.
- Continuous 24/7 Operation: To eliminate long charging times, the tractor will utilize a swappable battery pack system. Operators can quickly exchange a depleted battery for a fully charged one to keep working without interruption.
- High Versatility: The tractor will support a wide array of municipal and farming attachments, including loaders, mowers, and heavy-duty winter maintenance gear.
- Affordable Premium Quality: Despite carrying top-tier German engineering, the model is targeted to launch with highly competitive pricing.
- Future Autonomy and Solar Charging: Looking ahead, the company plans to integrate autonomous driving capabilities and solar-powered charging stations.
A Nod to the Past and a Sustainable Future
While the design details are still emerging, early teasers show a modern tractor silhouette with a fully enclosed operator cabin, aggressive off-road tires, floating wheel arches, integrated side steps, and a futuristic U-shaped LED headlight signature. Diess has also hinted at an alliance with an established, yet-unnamed agricultural equipment manufacturer to help bring the machine to production.
This venture is not entirely out of character for the former VW leader. Back in 2021, under Diess's guidance, Volkswagen launched the GenFarm initiative in Africa. That pilot program experimented with electric tractors, swappable power hubs, and solar micro-grids. With DIESS E-Agrartechnik, he is taking those foundational concepts and scaling them into a highly sophisticated product designed to revolutionize global agriculture.
