Kia Achieves Historic U.S. Sales Performance Powered by SUVs and Electrified Lineup
Kia America continues to warn about challenging macroeconomic conditions, yet their monthly sales data presents an entirely different, highly successful story. The automaker has officially secured its best-ever retail sales month in the United States, keeping its powerful market momentum moving forward at a rapid pace.
During the month of May, Kia delivered 80,502 vehicles to customers in the U.S. This marks a 1.9 percent year-over-year increase compared to the 79,007 units sold during the same month last year. While the combined total represents a steady, incremental rise, pure retail sales through dealership networks surged by an impressive 11 percent. This surge eclipses the brand's previous retail record set in August 2025. The difference between overall sales and retail growth is attributed to a temporary cooling in fleet operations, while direct consumer demand remains at an all-time high.
Key Milestones from Kia's Record-Breaking Month:
- Unprecedented YTD Success: Year-to-date sales for the brand reached a record high of 360,220 units through the end of May, representing a 2 percent increase over the previous year.
- Telluride Domination: The flagship Telluride SUV continues to dominate the segment, logging five consecutive months of record-breaking sales.
- Electrified Boom: Clean energy vehicle demand skyrocketed, led by triple-digit gains in hybrid models alongside strong popularity for the EV9 electric SUV.
SUVs and Hybrids Take the Center Stage
Much of Kia's current hot streak can be attributed to its dominant SUV portfolio. The flagship Telluride SUV enjoyed an 18.2 percent jump in May, reaching 13,665 units sold. The large three-row crossover has now secured five consecutive months of record-breaking growth, proving that its recent styling refresh has successfully captivated modern family car buyers.
Meanwhile, the Sportage compact SUV clinched the title of the brand's best-selling model for the month with 18,405 deliveries, a rise of 7.9 percent. Additionally, the highly practical Carnival multi-purpose vehicle enjoyed a 15.6 percent increase, finding 8,062 new homes. Both models achieved their highest-ever May performance metrics.
Eco-Friendly Models See Explosive Growth
The most dramatic growth occurred within Kia’s electrified vehicle division. Hybrid demand exploded across multiple segments, with the Sportage Hybrid climbing 171 percent, the Sorento Hybrid up 101 percent, and the Carnival Hybrid increasing by 32 percent. Overall, the brand's hybrid sales witnessed a jaw-dropping 179 percent rise.
Fully electric vehicles also contributed heavily to the positive results. The flagship all-electric EV9 SUV recorded 1,647 deliveries in May, continuing its strong upward trajectory. Although the smaller EV6 crossover experienced a minor dip of 11.6 percent, falling to 708 units, the massive wave of hybrid and large SUV sales easily kept Kia's growth trajectory safely on track.
